It is an important aspect of system administration. Introduction to networks and network security A network consists of a system of interconnected computers. Networks let people reach to geographically distant resources without being physically present. It is also used to send data back and forth to be connected. Networks can be of varied sizes but the purpose of network security is to protect them from unauthorised access and misuse. Networks are not safe as they have the inherent characteristic of facilitating remote access so it is important for any network administrator, irrespective of size and type of network to implement stringent security policies to stop potential losses.
Some potential pitfalls, which might arise if network security is not implemented properly--
Implementation of network security The well-managed approach to implementing a successful network security system is to be well prepared for all the types of attacks. This is a four-step process-- Secure – Make sure that all the components are well guarded with adequate authentication and authorisation policies. Examine – Monitor network activity on a regular basis and erect safeguards. Test – Check the weaknesses of your network's security system by having them attacked by a trusted entity. If you security can be broken then you need to implement stronger techniques. Enhance – On the basis of all the preceding phases, gather data and utilise it to build better security safeguards. Always remember and keep in mind that a good network security strategy is not good enough until the time, it is consistently well- reviewed and well -maintained. Your job is not fulfilled after employing some security policies and then leaving them to do whatever they want to do. Attackers always keep themselves up-to-date in their field so network administrators are supposed to follow suit.
